The Frontrunner scheme within Austria's FFG General Programme offers funding to companies with frontrunner strategies for their fields of R&D aimed at reaching or building on leading market positions (hidden champions). The funding model is open to all branches of industry, research topics and sizes of companies or projects. Non-repayable subsidies are available of up to maximum 25 % (major companies), max. 35 % (medium-sized companies), max. 45 % (small companies).

The Feasibility Studies scheme by FFG in Austria helps small and medium-sized companies develop feasibility studies through the services of research institutes and other qualified institutes, as well as company partners. Non-repayable subsidies are available covering up to 60 % of the costs (max. € 80 000 and not more than € 48 000 per project) of executing the study by universities, colleges of applied sciences, non-university research institutions, company partners, etc. In-kind costs up to max. 20 % are also acceptable.

The Energy Research Programme covers the entire energy chain from provision, energy conversion and transport to energy use. With this programme, the Climate and Energy Fund supports research projects in those areas in which Austria has a strong position, a high level of competence by international standards, and which can make a particularly effective contribution to climate protection and security of supply.

COIN helps Austria to better translate knowledge into innovation.

The COIN 'Network' funding line encourages technology transfer within entrepreneurial cooperation schemes, thus raising the level of innovation within businesses and strengthening their cooperation capacities. It focuses on output-oriented cooperation projects to develop and improve innovative products and processes.

The funding of cooperative research projects within FFG's General Programme (sector projects) supports pre-competitive research projects which do not include any directly exploitable product and process or service developments. Funding is provided for up to 60 % of total eligible projects costs. Submission is possible at any time and funding is through non-repayable subsidies.

BRIDGE Early Stage - transfer of science

Within the FFG's BRIDGE programme, an Early Stage funding line is offered which is open to all research topics. Project funding is provided for consortia between scientific partners and exploitation partners that are particularly close to the basics, whereby the focus of the work and project costs (max. 90 %) must lie with the scientific partner. As possible implementers of project results, companies participate in the project by providing material and services (at least 10 %). Only the costs of the scientific partner(s) will be funded.

As part of the FFG BRIDGE programme, BRIDGE 1 offers funding for all research topics providing the project costs (min. 80 %) are focused on the scientific partner. As possible implementers of the results, companies participate in the project financially and by providing material and services (max. 20 %).

Basic Programme - Funding for research and development in enterprises

The funding of a research and development project under FFG's Basic Programme is open to all technology fields, company and project sizes (e.g. also over € 1 million). The project's objective must be a functioning product, process or service.

The main criteria for funding include the innovation content, technical difficulty of the project and, above all, the prospects for economic exploitation. Funding typically amounts to 50 % of the project costs and can reach up to 70 % for start-ups or companies in start-up mode. Submission is possible at any time.

Funding photovoltaic systems in agriculture and forestry

Support is available for newly installed photovoltaic systems that are operated in parallel with the grid and have an output of more than 5 kWpeak and a maximum of 50 kWpeak. The photovoltaic systems can be installed on company and residential buildings as well as open spaces. In the case of open spaces, they must not be agricultural or nature conservation areas.

Subsidies are available to agricultural holdings within the framework of the 'Austrian Programme for Rural Development'. Support is provided for measures in the areas of biomass, biogas and other energy alternatives implemented by agricultural holdings.
